My dear Mr. President! I am writing to you as the President of a women’s association of peace in Austria. I am appealing to you, in the name of many women, to stop the stoning of Haijieh. Such deeds are abominable and wrong. With your powers, and the God of Abraham as your tradition, and mine, you must not allow the stoning to death or injury of Ms. Haiyeh Esmaelvand, or any other woman in your country. Let not Iran continue to be seen as a backward nation; bring it forward into 2005, and do it now please. The custom of stoning for an act such as extramarital relations is hideous in the extreme. Whatever one might think from a moral, religious or other values-base, it is not okay for a court of law or a court of religion to punish someone in this barbaric manner. Let her destiny be in the hands of God, not man and not a punitive male court. Let not her family avenge their honour, which is trivial in the extreme as compared to her life. Let not the people of Iran witness their government's lack of compassion and forebearance. Let this woman go! Since ancient times, human beings have been frail, faulty, flawed. God made us this way, and no matter what, the concept of punishment must fit the crimes or a consequence be a natural outcome of an event. Women are People! Should the act of Ms. Esmaelvand lead to a divorce, that is a natural conseqence, but there is no one else that should raise up an eye, let alone a stone in this situation. A true court of law would hold discourse on civil rights, family rights, women's rights. There are no rights more important to guard and only then is God served. You must see God as much larger and more forgiving. From my perspective, the narrow and small view your court has of God is unbecoming a true God, the God of Abraham was All Mighty, All Powerful and All Forgiving. He loved his children, all of them and in today's world, that means, ALL the people of this world. To say less is to believe in a lesser, subordinate, insubstantial God. I am not a very religious person, but it is easy to see that your courts are not made up of religious people, for they flaunt the very nature of Godliness in the unholy, narrow-minded belief that they are more important than the life of this woman! Only life is HOLY. God gave Life to the world and it is not for a court of men to take it away, defining extra-marital sex or adultery as punishable by death. Logic, religion, civility, world-opinion, respect for life and honour, require that you release Ms. Esmaelvand and other women held for similar situations. Let the people of Iran know they have a leader in their President, Mr. Khatami, not an ignorant bully. Dear Mr. Khatami, I am writing to express my DISGUST with the behaviour of your country, regarding the attrocities you allow to happen right under your eyes, and with your own consent. I refer first of all to attrocities committed against CHILDREN and WOMEN, as I believe your country to uphold laws that strongly discriminate against members of the female sex mainly. First of all, your country is in breach of human rights. Attrocities which encourage others to participate to cause the maximum amount of suffering until one is dead. I am aware that such attrocities give people an enraged frenzy which reaches up the climax when they achieve what they want, i.e. the death of the person in subject. Floggings, amputations, stonings, and any other cause of extreme torture and pain are all breaches of human rights. Furthermore who are you to impose such laws? Who is one who has no sin? YOU? Your sin is one of the biggest I have ever had the displeasure to encounter! Yours is the sin of encouraging and upholding sinful behaviour. How is it that in your eyes a man can have more than one wife, and a woman only one husband? Are you so ignorant that you do not know that men and women have the SAME NEEDS? Whether it is sex or work, or anything else in this life. What is a woman supposed to do when the man she married is a violent chauvinist pig? What is she supposed to do if she is unhappy or in a locked relationship that destroys her body as well as her very soul? Is she supposed to accept it? What if it was the other way round? What if a woman tormented a man so much, beat him up everyday, or poured boiling water over him? Is he supposed to accept it? You are misguided, and evil! You suppress your people with laws that were MADE BY MEN, not God. Your people are frustrated in many many ways. The culture of Islam fanatics is causing a wave of evil surges in the world. The same world I have to share with you. And I will not allow it. I will fight your views and your laws as long as I live, and I will unmask the farse of Islam. For you blaspheme against God. You place evil words in his mouth! You justify your cravings for evil, by stating it is God's will. IT IS NOT GOD'S WILL. THIS IS THE WILL OF MEN, WHO WANT TO CONTROL WOMEN!! What if she still wanted you? But she had no money to feed you, or send you to a good school to have an education? What if she had to PROSTITUTE herself to obtain this money, to feed you and clothe you? What if the "punishers" flogged your mother, then stoned her to death? WOULD YOU JUST STAND THERE DOING NOTHING? Are you so evil that you are easily able to FORGET who brought you into this world? Who fed you? Who gave you a home?? YOU CANNOT IMPOSE SINFUL LAWS ON ANYONE BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT DEVOID OF SIN YOURSELF. A man rapes a woman in your country, and the WOMAN is the one who gets put in prison, flogged and stoned to death? HOW IS THIS JUSTICE?? Women might be physically weaker than men, in general, but not all. Neither are women inferior to men. Most women in fact are far more intelligent, kind and knowledgeable than men. Your laws simply prove the fact that MEN in your country are AFRAID of the WOMEN. Men who impose such destructive and attrocious laws are COWARDS, who do not know how to fight clean. If a woman has relations outside her marriage, it means SHE IS NOT HAPPY with her marriage. And YOU cannot interfere, because YOU do not know why. Perhaps the man has been sleeping around, perhaps he has been beating his wife up. In which case I believe women should return the compliment and beat them up in return. I believe that if she is weaker, then she should take some lessons in martial arts, or simply grab a piece of stick to hit the abuser. This is precisely what I would do. No man will ever own me or defeat me. I am my own ruler. And so it should be with everyone else. Women have the right to choose who they want to marry, FOR LOVE, not for some sick choice made by her family. The same applies to men. They must choose who they want to marry. FORCED/ARRANGED MARRIAGES are not always what both parties want, and most of all, ONLY MARRIAGES FOR LOVE ARE ACCEPTED BY GOD. You have no right to commit such attrocities with women who prostitute themselves. IT'S THEIR BODIES. They can do whatever they like!!! Who are you to tell them what they can or cannot do? Are you God? No. You are not God. You are not even a messenger of God! So, I demand that you destroy the Sharia laws now. I demand you to remove this evil from your country while you have time. It does not matter if you upset a few fanatics, for the MAJORITY of the people will agree with you and love you for that. If only you are man enough to stand up and shout for justice, based on LOVE and MERCY, then your people will respect you even more, and not hate you. Ms Esmaelvand was charged with adultery and has been been imprisoned in the town of Jolfa since January 2000. Reportedly she was sentenced to five years in jail to be followed by execution. In November, the Iranian Supreme Court upheld the death sentence against her, but according to Amnesty International, changed the lower court’s verdict from “death by hanging” to “death by stoning.” Her co-defendant, a young man, faces death by public execution. Another woman, Leyla M., was sentenced to death by a court in the city of Arak. She is to be flogged and then hanged after being sentenced to death for “acts contrary to chastity.” This woman, now 19 and mentally handicapped, was sold into prostitution at the age of eight. She twice became pregnant, and each time was subjected to 100 lashes as punishment. If she is hanged, she will become the fourth child “offender” to be executed this year in Iran, where the penal code allows the execution of girls as young as nine and boys as young as 15. The punishment of death by stoning reveals, yet again, the barbaric cruelty of the Iranian theocratic regime. Brutal and oppressive for all Iranians, it has created a special hell for women, who must be covered in the veil, must be legally segregated from men in every aspect of public life and are barred from working in jobs which might compromise their “chastity.” Young women are lashed and beaten with chains for the “crime” of having a male friend. È stata condannata a morte, con lapidazione, dal tribunale islamico della città di Giolfa (nel nord dell'Iran). Abbiamo solo pochi giorni per salvarla. Immaginate una donna prigioniera da 5 anni e condannata alla pena capitale per un rapporto sessuale. Immaginate i momenti e i secondi della vita di questa persona nell?attimo della lapidazione. Che cosa sta pensando ora Hajieh? Alla sua esistenza e alle sofferenze subite durante la sua infanzia; al fatto di essere stata costretta a sposare un uomo che non amava; alla mancanza di diritti che tutelino le donne e alle leggi choc che la hanno portata alla situazione attuale; alle offese quotidiane subite per strada e in casa; alla madre, al padre, ai suoi amici? Oppure sta pensando a quando verrà avvolta in un lenzuolo bianco (così vuole la religione islamica) quando raggiungerà l?ultima stazione della sua vita? Noi iraniani, l'anno scorso, grazie alla solidarietà di tutto il mondo civile, abbiamo costretto il mondo islamico a interrompere le lapidazioni. Non dobbiamo permettere che questa barbarie ricominci. Con la forza della civiltà dobbiamo salvare Hajieh e fare in modo che questa legge crudele vada per sempre in moratoria. L'opinione pubblica è molto sensibile a queste cose e la repubblica islamica è sotto pressione. Il successo di questa lotta farà gioire tutti i democratici, vedendo sparire da questo pianeta delle leggi medievali. Noi tutti, a livello internazionale, ci stiamo impegnando in questo senso e, in particolare, ad evitare che questa sentenza faccia il suo corso. Torsdag 16 december 2004 IRAN Risk för nya avrättningar I november fastställde högsta domstolen i Iran dödsdomen mot Hajieh Esmailvand, för otrohet, och beslutade även att hon ska stenas till döds. Enligt uppgift dömdes hon vid den första rättegången till fem års fängelse, och till avrättning genom hängning när fängelsestraffet har avtjänats. Hajieh Esmailvand suttit i fängelse i staden Jolfa i nordvästra Iran sedan januari 2000. Hennes medåtalade, vars namn inte är känt av Amnesty, var 17 år då "brottet" begicks. Han dömdes också till döden genom hängning, och risken är stor att även hans straff kommer att verkställas inom en snar framtid. Iran är ett av de länder i världen som genomför flest avrättningar. Under förra året avrättades minst 108 personer. Trots att Iran har anslutit sig till FN:s barnkonvention, som har ett absolut förbud mot dödsstraff för ungdomar under 18 år, har Iran i år avrättat minst tre personer som var under 18 år då brottet begicks. Iran: Woman to Be Buried Up to Chest and Stoned to Death In Five Days For details of how to help stop the executions of Hajieh and Leyla M, please go to: www.amnesty.org.uk/action/ http://www.ayneh.com/html/sangsar.php (Farsi) An Iranian woman charged with adultery faces death by stoning in the next five days after her death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court last month. Her unnamed co-defendant is at risk of imminent execution by hanging. Amnesty International members are now writing urgent appeals to the Iranian authorities, calling for the execution to be stopped. According to reports, Hajieh Esmailvand was sentenced to five years imprisonment, to be followed by execution by stoning, for adultery with an unnamed man who at the time was a 17 year old minor. Although the exact date of her arrest and trial are not known, it is reported that she has been imprisoned in the town of Jolfa, in the north west of Iran, since January 2000. The Iranian Penal Code is very specific about the manner of execution and types of stones which should be used. Article 102 states that men will be buried up to their waists and women up to their breasts for the purpose of execution by stoning. Article 104 states, with reference to the penalty for adultery, that the stones used should “not be large enough to kill the person by one or two strikes, nor should they be so small that they could not be defined as stones”. All death sentences in Iran must be upheld by the Supreme Court before they can be carried out. In November 2004, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence against Hajieh Esmailvand but changed the lower court's verdict from ‘death by hanging’ to ‘death by stoning’. Reports suggest that the Supreme Court has ordered that the remainder of Hajieh’s five year prison sentence be annulled so that the stoning sentence can be carried out before 21 December. Amnesty International UK Media Director Mike Blakemore said: "This is an urgent case. Hejieh could be killed in the next five days if we do not act quickly. Our members here in the UK are writing to the Iranian authorities, imploring them to stop this brutal execution. Campaigners in Iran are also taking action. But we need more people to stand up and be counted, to tell the Iranian authorities that this is not acceptable. "Every day, thousands of women across the world face repression and violence, just because they are women. From the battlefield to the bedroom, women are at risk. Violence against women is a human rights atrocity and one we must tackle immediately." The news follows reports of a 19-year old girl, "Leyla M", who has a mental age of eight, reportedly facing imminent execution for "morality-related" offences in Iran after being forced into prostitution by her mother as a child. According to a Tehran newspaper report of 28 November, she was sentenced to death by a court in the central Iranian city of Arak and the sentence has now been passed to the Supreme Court for confirmation. Leyla M was reportedly sentenced to death on charges of "acts contrary to chastity" by controlling a brothel, having intercourse with blood relatives and giving birth to an illegitimate child. She is to be flogged before she is executed. She had apparently “confessed” to the charges. Leyla was forced into prostitution by her mother when she was eight years old, according to the 28 November report, and was raped repeatedly thereafter. She gave birth to her first child when she was nine, and was sentenced to 100 lashes for prostitution at around the same time. At the age of 12, her family sold her to an Afghan man to become his “temporary wife”. His mother became her new pimp, “selling her body without her consent”. At the age of 14 she became pregnant again, and received a further 100 lashes, after which she was moved to a maternity ward to give birth to twins. After this "temporary marriage", her family sold her again, to a 55-year-old man, married with two children, who had Leyla’s customers come to his house. One in three women around the world suffer serious violence in their lifetime, at home, in the community or in war, just because they are women. Amnesty International is running a global campaign to 'Stop Violence Against Women'. The human rights organisation is calling on governments to repeal laws that permit and encourage violence against women, and on communities to challenge attitudes that allow violence to continue. Background information Amnesty International is aware of at least one case in which a sentence of execution by stoning has reportedly been issued this year. According to a report on 8 January 2004 in the Iran newspaper, a criminal court in the city of Qazvin sentenced an unnamed man to 80 lashes and 10 years'’ imprisonment to be followed by execution by stoning. It is not known whether this sentence has been carried out. Amnesty International believes that the death penalty is the most extreme form of torture. It is a cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, and a violation of the right to life as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It is clear that the punishment of stoning is designed to cause the victim grievous pain before leading to death. Such methods of execution specifically designed to increase the suffering of victims are of particular concern to Amnesty International, as the most extreme and cruel form of torture. NSS Newsletter. I have to say that the word "demand" is unpleasant in this context as we have no locus for demands, only requests and suggestions. The word "demand" has a distinctly colonialist feel about it. Also I would be unwilling to call for the end of Sharia law without qualification. Against Stoning may I ask Manx people to take a Christmas break and help
stop the execution of two Iranian women. I learnt today (16/12/04) that Hajiyeh Esmaelvand faces death by stoning in just two weeks for sexual relations outside marriage. By the time you are working off your Boxing Day leftovers she could be buried up to the neck, head covered, with stones raining down on her until she is dead. Meanwhile ‘Leyla M’, a 19 year old considered by doctors to have a mental age of 9, is having her case heard by the Supreme Court. If she loses she will be first whipped and then stoned to death if she survives (most don’t past 100 lashes). Her ‘crime’ was to bear an illegitimate child after relations with blood relatives. During Leyla’s childhood she has already been whipped twice for bearing children, after being sold on by families who effectively hired her out as a prostitute. Incidentally, while Sharia law considers both parties equally guilty in a case involving sex with a blood relative, neither family has faced the courts. Please write to the Iranian Embassy in the UK at 16 Prince’s Gate, London, SW7 1PT, or to President Mohamad Khatami’s e-mail address ( khatami@president.ir.) or fax (0098 21 649 5880) to protest these outrages. On a more positive note I can report that both women facing stoning sentences passed by Nigerian Sharia courts have now been acquitted. Daso Adamu (25) was acquitted and discharged by an Islamic appeals court in Ningi, Nigeria on December 9th after the court ruled that the evidence against her was faulty. Hajara Ibrahim (18) had her case quashed by the local Sharia court in Lere, Bauchi state, on 5th October. The judge in the Upper Sharia court in Dass declared that convicting the pregnant young woman for adultery had been incorrect, as she was not married. In both cases, the deciding factor appears to have been the sheer volume of mail from ordinary people around the globe to President Ouesegun Obasanjo demanding that he intervene. I and my ICAS colleagues thank all Manx people who contributed to that mailbag, and this paper for allowing me space to publicise the issue. Barn blir dömda till stening och de grundläggande mänskliga rättigheterna negligeras ständigt av den Islamiska regimen. Kroppsstraff, amputering, stening och spöstraff hänförs till de islamiska lagar som styrde för 1500 år sedan. Straffen är grymma, omänskliga och förnedrande och används än idag i Iran. Som barn blev Hajie Esmailvand bortgift till en äldre man. Om två veckor ska hon stenas till döds på grund av äktenskapsbrott. Detta får absolut inte ske och måste stoppas omedelbart. Heather Johnston Ottawa, Canada Your Excellency, I urge you to intervene, in the name of the Mercy of your God, to stop the execution of your citizen, Hajiyeh Esmaelvand. I also call upon you, in the name of that same Mercy and Benificence, to free all prisoners who have been charged under laws for consensual sexual "offences". Around the world in all generations, in all places, and in all religions, people have expressed their sexuality and affection in different ways. Some cultures even permit polygamy, which, although acceptable to some, would not be to others. We all have differnet standards. But it is obvious to all humane people that the horrors of execution do not work in setting an example to others, or even as a deterrant, otherwise your country would not be carrying out such attrocities in this 'modern age'. Although I am not aware of the detail of her situation or her case, I ask you to please interject in her case to pardon or at least commute her sentence, if for no other reason than humanitarian reason. Killing or stoning her does not undo any wrong she may have done nor teach a lesson to other girls or women. It only tarnishes the Iranian justice system and labels it as barbaric at the least with discrimination against women.
