June, the international day of protest against Amina Lawal’s stoning sentence
On June 3, 2003 the International Committee Against Stoning (ICAS) and some other women’s rights and human rights organizations organized a rally in front of Nigerian embassy in Turkey to protest against Amina Lawal’s death sentence in Nigeria.
Nazmiye Halvasi, the representative of ICAS read out the resolution in
condemnation of Amina Laval’s death sentence. Other women and student’s
activists including women from Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP) and Toilers
Women’s Organization (EKB) were also among the speakers at the rally.
Participants in the rally were carrying placards against political Islam
and in support of freedom and equality.
Women and student organizations performed a play. In this play they
symbolized an Islamic cleric punishing a woman whom was rescued by people.
Handing a protest letter to the Nigerian embassy demanding a meeting with the
ambassador ended the rally.
The rally was very successful in drawing public attention toward the
issue of Amina Lawal. Nazmiye Halvasi
was invited to give interviews with Sky Turk and NTV channel.
